Brown County Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program is dedicated to educating youth about suicide prevention and that it is Ok to Ask4Help. We offer schools in our area the opportunity to have presentations for the students and staff. This is offered to the schools at no cost.
School presentations are divided into two parts. The first part is for school staff. This includes all teachers, administration, janitors, kitchen staff, librarian and any other staff associated with the school. This is important because it is impossible to predict whom a student may approach if they need help. A student may feel more comfortable talking to the lunch lady rather than his teacher so everyone needs to be prepared. The staff receives the same presentation as the students so they can be prepared for any questions or concerns that may come up after the presentation. The second part is for the students. Our goal is to have as many students and staff educated on suicide prevention efforts and the warning signs of suicide.
During the presentation we go over the risk factors for suicide, warning signs of suicide, depression and how it relates to suicide, what can we do to help and the yellow ribbon card. We encourage the school to have a counselor on site during the presentation.
We provide each student with yellow ribbon cards and a brochure to further bring home our message of suicide prevention. Our presenters often are able to speak from personal experiences which makes it more realistic for the students. The presenters went through training in Colorado by Dar and Dale Emme, founders of the Yellow Ribbon Program.
